India allowed an Iranian warship to dock at Kochi amid the escalating Israel–Iran war, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar saying the decision was taken on humanitarian grounds. The Iranian naval vessel IRIS Lavan had requested urgent permission to enter an Indian port after reporting technical problems while sailing in the region. ()

Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue, Jaishankar said the ship was carrying 183 crew members, including young naval cadets, and had originally travelled to India for the International Fleet Review before tensions in West Asia escalated. He stressed that India approached the situation “from a point of humanity” and believed allowing the ship to dock was the right decision. ()

The development comes just days after a U.S. submarine torpedoed another Iranian warship, IRIS Dena, in the Indian Ocean, killing more than 80 sailors. The incident has intensified the regional crisis and brought the conflict closer to India’s maritime neighbourhood.
