In Lesson 3 of my AAC Parent Support series, I talk about finding a *GOOD* speech and language pathologist or SLP or speech therapist.
Don't have one? Don't worry!!! I got you. I'm going to show you everything I've learned.
1) Make your SLP has extensive Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device experience!!! AAC has grown in popularity around 2010 so this is a relatively new field for most SLPs. Since then, there have been many advancements in best practices, research, and strategies to teach AAC. It's ok if your SLP doesn't have a lot of experience in AAC. They are trained in how to teach language. As long as they are willing to learn, try new things, and adapt, that is always a good thing. It's good to have a trusted resource on your language questions.
2) Teletherapy - look into it. It was the best source of knowledge transfer for us. We were not limited to just local SLPs; we looked statewide and ended up working with an SLP in another state!! The teletherapy sessions trained ME to be my daughter's SLP so I could generalize the skills in the home. It's what I started QVoice AAC app. It is teletherapy friendly. My SLP can remote login to my daughter's device in real time, make changes to it, have it synced to her device in real time.
3) SLP therapy is like parenting. Everyone has their own way of doing things. Learn. Understand. Now do what works for your family.
