Most people associate 'Pago Pago' with American Samoa because of Somerset Maugham's novella 'Rain'. It was originally published as 'Miss Thompson' but the theatrical plays and movies were titled as 'Rain', so there you go! In fact, Pago Pago has never been the largest village on the island of Tutuila, nor the capital of the Territory (it's Fagatogo Village), but the name given to the bay, since Pago Pago lies at the head of the bay. The guest house where the short story was set at (and Maugham himself stayed) is actually located in Malaloa, halfway between Fagatogo and Pago Pago!

As the center of commerce has moved from the port in Fagatogo to the Tafuna plain where the international airport port, the port area, including Pago Pago, has lost importance, although you'll see a number of businesses on the road as we ascend to the ridge crest.

The crew who made the road from the ridge crest had t-shirts printed with the inscription 'Who says you can't pour concrete vertically?'
