Norfolk & Western 611 - The ASME Historic Engineering Landmark Rededication Ceremony - 9/25/25

Описание: On September 25, 2025, the iconic Norfolk & Western Class J No. 611 (owned and operated by the Virginia Museum of Transportation Inc.) was formally rededicated as an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark prior to her private VIP excursion on the Virginia Scenic Railway in Goshen, Virginia.

Originally designated in 1984, No. 611’s landmark status recognizes her as one of the finest examples of American steam locomotive engineering ever built. This rededication ceremony celebrates not only her extraordinary design and performance, but also her continued operation as a living, breathing artifact of American industrial history. The event brought together representatives from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Virginia Museum of Transportation Inc., historians, engineers, preservationists, legislators, dignitaries, news media, volunteers, and members of the public to reflect on the locomotive’s past, present, and future. Speakers highlighted the Class J’s technological innovations, its role in advancing steam locomotive design, and the importance of preserving engineering heritage through active interpretation and operation.

Today, No. 611 continues to serve as a traveling classroom connecting audiences of all ages to engineering excellence, skilled trades, and the craftsmanship that powered America’s railroads.
