As a part of the 2026 Symposium on the True, Good, and Beautiful, Dr. Catherine Peters presents on "The True, the Good, and the Beautiful of Disability."
The abstract for Dr. Peter's presentation is as follows: "The Catholic Intellectual Tradition, informed by the theological and philosophical insights of Thomas Aquinas, offers resources for exploring central concerns of human life and discerning what is true, good, and beautiful. Yet disability -- a prominent and pervasive aspect of human life -- is often thought to challenge objective or normative claims about human nature and flourishing. Common responses treat disability either as a defect to be corrected or as a mere difference, no better or worse than any other variation of human life. Both, I will argue, fail to capture the reality and significance of disability and undermine Catholic teaching on the true, good, and beautiful of the human being. This talk presents a Catholic perspective on the human person, showing how attending to the truth of human nature reveals its goodness and, ultimately, allows us to appreciate the beauty of all human life."
