This lecture is drawn from excerpts taken from the book:
A History of the Catholic Church in the Pacific Northwest 1743-1983 by Wilfred P. Shoenberg, S.J. Published in 1987 by the Pastoral Press in Washington, DC.
The topics covered in this lecture are:
• The Iroquois who came to the West and intermarried with the Flatheads bringing Catholicism with them.
• The many requests from the Indians for "Blackrobes"
• The Protestant Missionaries who came West
• Fr. Peter DeSmet S.J. who loved the Indians and who was loved by them
• The coming of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur
• The events leading up to the Whitman Massacre (1847)
