After a 3 year break due to the pandemic, I returned to India in fall of 2022 for a pilgrimage with some friends from Palo Alto, California
This is a travelogue of our trip to Babaji's cave in the foothills of the himalayas. As Yogananda describes in the Autobigraphy of a Yogi, it is in this cave that the great Mahavatar Babaji met Lahiri Mahasaya in the year 1861 to resurrect the teachings of Kriya yoga in this new age.
The cave is 2 hrs north of Ranikhet in Uttarakhand. In 1861, Lahiri Mahasaya who was posted in Ranikhet for his job, wandered into the woods to find Babaji, who led him to this cave. Yogananda gives a detailed account of this incident in Chapter 34 of the Autobiography of a Yogi
This is one of the most sacred pilgrimage spots on this planet to any practitioner of Kriya yoga. The spiritual renaissance pioneered by Lahiri and later brought to the west by Yogananda all began in this tiny cave. The cave is preserved even today in that same pristine condition, alive with the vibrations of Babaji and Lahiri Mahasaya.
