Venous ultrasound is the standard imaging test for patients suspected of having lower extremity deep venous thrombosis (DVT). However, there is disagreement among authoritative groups regarding the necessary components of the venous ultrasound.

Protocols issued by the American College of Chest Physicians, American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine/American College of Radiology/Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound, Society for Vascular Ultrasound, and Intersocietal Accreditation Commission Vascular Technology vary.

The lack of a single protocol has led to misunderstandings between ordering clinicians and facilities providing the service. This may result in underdiagnosis, unnecessary testing, and insufficient imaging. The variability is exacerbated by confusing terminology in reports. There is an extensive body of published data addressing the components of the venous ultrasound examination.

The Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound assembled an interdisciplinary panel of experts in venous diagnosis to review the contemporary literature and develop consensus recommendations to create a standardized approach to the ultrasound diagnosis of lower extremity venous thrombosis.
