Australian Light Horse were mounted troops who served in the Second Boer War and WW1.
The Battle of Beersheba was fought on the 31st of October, 1917.
The charge of the 4th Australian Light Horse at Beersheba, late in the afternoon of the 31st of October 1917, is remembered as the last great cavalry charge.
The 4th Light Horse Brigade charged the heavily fortified town of Beersheba The charge began at dusk, with the brigade using their bayonets as swords. The Australians' surprise attack carried them through the Turkish defenses and secured the town.
During the inter-war years, a number of regiments were raised as part of Australia's part-time military force. These units were gradually mechanised, either before, or during WW2.
A number of Australian Light Horse units are still in existence today.
