7 Women started this with a capital of just Rs.80 in hand and today it is one of the most loved brands of India. Here's the story of Lijjat Papad
Shri Mahila Grih Udyog
Lijjat Papad also known
as Lijjat Papad is one of
the largest brands of
India and the most loved
success story of the country.
In the late 1950s Mumbai,
7 women started this
brand with a capital
of just 80 Rs in hand.
These women came from
very ordinary backgrounds
with no formal education
and business. They chose
this business as it was
convenient for them and
did not need much of a
skill. It was simple,
they made papads and
sold them in the local
stores. Their quality was
so good that other stores
also demanded their
product. They slowly
began to scale up and
hire more women.
Their major agenda,
more than making money
was to employ more
women and give them a
sustainable livelihood.
They adopted a collective
model of ownership
and gave all those who
joined an ownership
of the company. The
owners were called
Lijjat Ben or Lijjat sisters.
This is a model adopted
by major companies like
Starbucks. This is one
of the best models
adopted as this gives
a sense of responsibility
to perform the best as it was
their own company too!
While Starbucks came
forward later, Lijjat
had already adopted
it without much of
investment and business
planning in it. Now they
started to become
popular. They scaled
up the business and
built a robust supply
chain which was simply
the terraces of the homes
of the Lijjat sisters. This was
so much cost effective
and efficient compared
to large office spaces.
They further streamlined
this affair by making
centers where doughs
with the typical recipe
would be supplied to the
sisters. They would come
to these centres using the
bus facility provided
by the company.
Once they collected it,
they would go home
prepare the papad and
dry it and get it delivered
to take the money and
the dough for the next
batch. Supervisors would
make surprise visits to the
house to check the quality
of making of the Papad
and the hygiene
of the house. With these
basic ideas and good support
for one another Lijjat was
able to build a 1600 cr
business empire, spread
across 69 branches and
has over 40,000 employees.
They ship their products
to over 15 countries.
Their vision and mission
is Sarvodhya or Progress for all.
Till today no Lijjat employee
was asked to leave the
company and has been
treated with equal respect
and love. This has made
it one of the largest brands
of the country.
How much do you like
Lijjat Papad now?
