Roar of the Beast was released for the Genesis as one of a pair of games for the insanely popular Disney movie. It's the more action-oriented title of the pair, and much harder than the "girl" version, Belle's Quest. This one is a platformer that focuses on just a couple important scenes from the film: you walk through the castle beating up random animals (not that that was prominent in the movie...), you save Belle from the dangerous forest, repel invading villagers with the help of sentient household objects, and finally, fight Gaston on the roof of the castle.

There aren't any adventure-type elements like there are in Belle's Quest (not that I missed them here), and the game is just as good looking and sounding as its sibling. In fact, many of the cinematics use the same exact illustrations to represent scenes from the film.

I liked the game well enough, but it really lacks any real depth or variety. It's also a bit too difficult, with finnicky hit detection and some enemies that can absorb way too many hits. The controls are also a bit sluggish, and the enemy placements often seem to coincide exactly with where the controls decide to not respond the way you want.

It's not a bad game by a long shot - it's substantially easier (and as a result, more fun) than the brutal SNES title, and Software Creations got the aesthetic down pretty well. If only the rest of the game matched its presentation... well then we'd be playing something closer to the fantastic Disney titles that Sega made themselves. As it is, it's probably worthwhile for fans of the movies, but this one really lacks the universal appeal of other games of the time like Castle of Illusion or Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse.
