Cardinal George Pell has died at the age of 81 with Vatican Media reporting he passed away in Rome after complications from hip replacement surgery.
George Pell was born in Ballarat, Victoria in 1941 and ordained as a priest in 1966 before being named Archbishop of Melbourne in 1996 and later, Archbishop of Sydney in 2001.
Pope John Paul II announced he would appoint him to the College of Cardinals in 2003, and Cardinal Pell helped elect Pope Benedict and Pope Francis.
In 2017 he was charged with a series of sexual offences by Victoria Police and denied the accusations.
He stood trial in Melbourne and was convicted on five counts of child sexual abuse involving two boys in the 1990s.
He was sentenced to six years in jail but was acquitted after an appeal to the High Court in 2020.
