In August 1943, during the fighting around Belgorod in the southern sector of the Kursk bulge, elements of the 2nd SS Panzer Division “Das Reich” used large ground recognition panels to signal incoming Luftwaffe aircraft.
These panels were especially important for dive-bombers like the Junkers Ju 87, commonly known as the Stuka, which operated in close coordination with frontline units.
In the smoke, dust, and confusion of the Eastern Front, clear visual identification helped reduce the risk of friendly fire and improved rapid close-air-support (CAS) targeting.
The fighting around Belgorod formed part of the wider Battle of Kursk, one of the largest armored clashes in history. By this stage of the war, coordination between ground forces and air power had become critical to battlefield survival.
Recognition flags and panels—highly visible from the air—were a practical solution in an era before modern precision communication systems.
