This is the painting that ruined everything. In 1874 Monet submitted this to an exhibition and a critic used the title to mock the whole group. Impressionists. He meant it as an insult. Monet and his friends kept the name and changed art forever.
The funny thing is this painting was stolen in 1985. Someone walked into the Marmottan Museum in Paris and took it along with eight other works. Gone for five years. The painting that gave a whole movement its name was sitting in a hideout in Corsica until they found it in 1990.
