Kallistos Ware, in a collection of essays on the Philokalia, writes that the spirituality of the writings of Evagrios the Solitary and St Maximus the Confessor, who built on the works of Evagrios, prevails in most of the Philokalia. The writings of Evagrios the Solitary also influenced deeply St John Climacus, St. John Cassian, and St Maximus the Confessor, and many other Early Church Fathers.

• Philokalia: Evagrios the Solitary, Spiritu...
We also reflect on:
• How Evagrios was considered the young Cappadocian Church Father because he was ordained as a priest by St Basil, and was ordained by St Gregory of Nazianzus.
• How Evagrios adopted the hesychastic prayer, a mystical contemplative prayer, the Jesus Prayer, in which you simply pray, “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Have mercy on me, a sinner.”
• Comments by Julia Konstantinovsky on the works of Evagrios.
• Evagrios’ references from Jeremiah and St Paul.
• How the monastic calling is, in its essence, a turning away from selfishness, seeking selflessness, and how this monastic calling is open to everyone.
• How marriage is a monastic calling.
• How to fast, what fasting means.

As Socrates teaches us, the examined life is a life worth living. We would be fools if we did not desire to learn from our multitude of friends whose words live in the works of the classics that have survived from past centuries and millennia. The Stoic and moral philosophers of Greece and Rome saw philosophy as an evangelical enterprise, seeking to spread the joy of living a godly life for its own sake.

The ancient world was a warrior culture out of necessity, to learn from the distant past we should not only judge them from our modern perspective but also from their own ancient perspective on their own terms.
