On July 20, 1969 the Apollo 11 mission made the first manned lunar landing. This is the Command Module that carried the three astronauts. The crew chose the name "Columbia" for this specific Command Module. Included at the exhibit were the bright silver lunar sample box, lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin's helmet and gloves, a view of inside and outside of hatch, and two F-1 Injector Plates from the J 2 engines of the Saturn V first stage.
Visible is the discoloration and pitting on the exterior of Columbia incurred during reentry through the earth's atmosphere.
