Captain on Board – A Documentary on Maritime Leadership
Captain on Board is more than just a glimpse into the maritime world; it is a story of responsibility, leadership, and a profound love for the sea — themes that resonate deeply with those who work at sea and audiences alike.
This feature-length documentary follows five captains, each with their own vessel, environment, and challenges. From icebreakers in the Arctic to offshore heavy-lift vessels, from merchant ships to the quiet home of a retired master mariner, the film captures the many faces of maritime leadership.
The captains featured in the film include:
Captain Nina Kangas, Master of Seaway Alfa Lift, offering a rare view into the offshore construction and heavy-lift industry.
Captain Niclas Seligson and the crew of MS Finnstar, showing the daily life aboard a RoPax vessel.
Captain Timo Kosunen of MS Viikki, taking viewers on a voyage from Raahe to Kokkola.
Captain Lauri Vuorinen, sharing personal memories and reflections from his decades-long career.
Captain Pasi Järvelin aboard the icebreaker Polaris, representing Finland’s world-class icebreaking expertise.
Filmed aboard ships and in ports from bridges to decks, from engine rooms to crew quarters — the documentary showcases not only the captains but the entire crew, emphasizing that maritime success is always a team effort. The footage captures a variety of operations, cargo types, and sea conditions, highlighting the importance of every role on board.
At its heart, Captain on Board is a tribute to those who guide vessels safely from port to port — often unseen, yet vital to keeping the world moving. It offers viewers a chance to feel the weight of responsibility at sea, witness decision-making under pressure, and understand the human side of leadership in an ever-moving environment.
Supported by Aboa Mare, Subsea7, Finnlines, ESL Shipping, Arctia, OSM, and many others, with partial funding from the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation and The Shipowners' Foundation Finland. The documentary stands as a cultural record of today’s maritime industry and an inspiration for its future.
