August 2025. I spent three days in Kavala (Καβάλα), a Aegean port city in Greece with a rich Ottoman past. From wandering the narrow lanes of the Panagia district to exploring the abandoned tobacco warehouses that once powered Kavala’s economy, the city still carries the marks of its Ottoman legacy.
Along the way, there's food: Kavala’s signature almond cookie (Kavala Kurabiyesi), soutzoukakia (spiced meatballs brought from Ottoman Izmir), and bouyourdi, a fiery Northern Greek dish of baked feta, tomatoes, and peppers, best shared with ouzo by the sea.
Kavala is more than ruins and food; it’s a true crossroads of cultures, where Ottoman architecture, Greek tradition, and modern life meet.
