Founded by Jeff Yan and an Exit Ellen alum with deep high-frequency trading experience, HyperLiquid set out to deliver centralized exchange performance in a decentralized framework. When no existing Layer 1 could meet their speed and efficiency needs, they built their own chain from scratch—HyperCore. This technical foundation became the backbone of a platform designed to scale.

The team launched trading publicly in late 2023, initiating a weekly airdrop of 1 million points and introducing a novel referral system that tied user incentives directly to product usage. Within weeks, they surpassed rivals like Vortex and Gains, and by April 2024, they had onboarded over 100,000 users and were processing $1 billion in daily volume.

Then came the token. In November 2024, 310 million tokens were airdropped to nearly 100,000 users, launching at a $14 billion valuation and quickly rallying to $18. A buyback and burn mechanism through the HyperLiquid Insurance Fund absorbed over $1 billion worth of tokens, reinforcing demand and trust.

By early 2025, the platform briefly flipped Ethereum in protocol revenue and continued dominating on-chain trading. July saw $320 billion in volume and $15 billion in open interest, while token price peaked at $50. The strategy? Build product-first, reward early users, and let the community drive growth.
