The Rabuga
“Bitchi” signifies the Garo people’s deep emotions, love and honor towards the elderly respected persons from the relatives and also from the society. This custom has beekn practicing from the rote. It represents one of the highly rich customs from our culture. The origin history of Bitchi is very interesting though it could be weird for the “Modern”. The present aged among the Garo’s belief that their ancestors have received the recipe of chu/bitchi from their gods in order to use in their festivals. That’s why the Garo pepole still use it as a thanks giving offering in their every festival. Since, it was provided by their God . Here it is very clear to us that they had direct communication with him.
Here, some beautiful incidents which used to be happen in the olden times. After doing whole day long exhausted works, in the evening they used to gather together in one of the houses to drink some Chu/ Bitchi. Most of the times, they used to take place on the yard, where they sat side by side in a circle position. There would be specific persons to prepare the Chu and to serve it and everyone would get turn one after the other. During the drinking time they used to sing, dance and narrate story. This is how they used to refresh them and make fit for the next day. Though, the excess drinking of Chu could make them drunk.
However, Bitchi is the fermented juice of rice. It has to go through different stages to become drinkable Bitchi. We are very much dedicated to keep up our languages, culture and practices. Since these are losing day by day. Here, is one famous saying, “chu ko ring.a garo raja, hanthamona mirong dongja.” all of us heard this from our grandparents. Though, we don’t listen much now in this present generation. If the situation continues like this, hopefully our future generation won’t get all these sweet memories.
So, we are trying with our best to give the new music test by combining the Garo folk and the modern music. Now, our first and most goals are to modernize the Garo music.
