For most of the 1950s and 60s, if an American walked into a motorcycle dealership and bought an imported bike, the chances were better than two to one that it came from Britain. From factories in the industrial Midlands — in Birmingham, in Coventry, in Wolverhampton.
At its peak, the British motorcycle industry outsmarts the likes of Harley-Davidson and Indian to dominate global biker culture. Americans are queuing up to import British bikes. Hollywood puts them on cinema screens in every relevant film of the era. Land speed records keep getting broken by machines built in the Midlands.
But fast forward to 1975, and the Big Three is gone. The Triumph factory is occupied by its own workers. BSA is bankrupt. Norton is in receivership. And the Japanese have taken everything.
Total disaster.
Now, there is a simple villain in this story. His name is Dennis Poore — the man the British government hands the keys to in 1973.
But the truth is more complicated — and more damning.
Either way, what follows will become the most unprecedented industrial incident in British history.
