Australian Cardinal George Pell has passed away at the age of 81 due to complications after a scheduled hip operation. He had served in Rome under Pope Francis, who put him in charge of the Secretariat for the Economy to bring transparency to Vatican finances. Cardinal Pell was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2003 and had also served on the Council of Cardinals from 2013 to 2018, helping Pope Francis govern the Church.
