The Laughing Paratrooper: First Sergeant Leonard Funk's Extraordinary Act of Valor at Holzheim
On January 29, 1945, during the Battle of the Bulge in Holzheim, Belgium, U.S. Army First Sergeant Leonard A. Funk Jr. of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, faced overwhelming odds. Confronted by approximately 90 re-armed German soldiers who had overpowered their guards, with an MP40 pressed to his stomach and ordered to surrender, Funk feigned compliance while unleashing a devastating counterattack with his Thompson submachine gun.
In under a minute, he killed 21 enemy soldiers, wounded dozens more, and inspired his disarmed comrades to reclaim weapons, forcing the remainder to surrender. This audacious display of courage and quick thinking prevented a potentially disastrous rear assault on his company and earned Funk the Medal of Honor—the nation's highest award for valor.
A highly decorated paratrooper who also received the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts, Funk exemplified extraordinary heroism in World War II.
