Today, I’m out feeding my chickens one of their favorite treats fresh kale and comfrey leaves. As soon as they see me step outside with a handful of those big green leaves, it’s like an unspoken signal. They come running from every corner of the yard my beautiful flock of black Australorps shining in the sunlight, with a few Ameraucanas mixing in for color and personality.

If you’ve ever raised chickens, you know how much joy those little moments bring — the soft clucks, the flutter of wings, the way they crowd around your feet like they’re saying “thank you” in their own language. I can never help but laugh a little when they rush in; it’s a simple kind of happiness that makes all the early mornings and hard work worth it.

Comfrey is more than just a treat for them it’s full of minerals, vitamins, and protein that support healthy feathers, strong eggshells, and overall vitality. It grows fast and bounces back quickly after harvest, which makes it one of my favorite plants to grow for both the garden and the animals. On a small homestead, I try to make sure every plant serves more than one purpose. The leaves become feed, the roots help improve soil structure, and the whole plant feels like a gift that keeps on giving.
