League of Nations - GCSE History Revision
The League of Nations was established in 1920 as part of the Treaty of Versailles. It was the brainchild of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, as a new way of conducting world affairs and to prevent future wars. However, the League was hampered from the very start, as the USA, Germany and the Soviet Union (until 1934) never took up membership. The League failed to take effective action when Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931 or when Italy invaded Abyssinia in 1935. These failures destroyed the League's authority and it was powerless to stop Hitler's aggression in the late 1930s. The League failed to prevent the outbreak of World War 2 in 1939.
