Meet Steve Gaunt, a young man from Leeds who came to Croatia in 1991 to fight the Serbs as a volunteer fighting injustice. He was wounded, losing a foot on a landmine, became a Croatian citizen, married with 6 children, and he has been living a very contented life in the eastern Croatian town of Vinkovci ever since.
And Steve Gaunt has done some rather unusual things since his contribution to the Homeland War. These include opening his own English pub, the White Boar, in a field literally in the middle of nowhere (and where this podcast was filmed), getting Yorkshire puddings on the menu of a Vinkovci restaurant, responsible for the installation of a Welsh red telephone box to the town centre of Vinkovci (one of the few working public telephones in Croatia still working in 2022), producer of Croatia's first authentic cider, and much, much more. So pour yourself a glass and enter the unique world of Croatia's most contented man with Yorkshire roots.
