This year marks the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda — a game that taught me what exploration and adventure should feel like. But growing up in suburban America, I couldn't just walk out my door and explore like Link. I needed a car. The woods in my backyard were torn down for cul-de-sacs. Adventure required planning, driving, and money.
It wasn't until I moved to Europe that I finally experienced the kind of spontaneous exploration Zelda promised: hiking trails accessible by train, forests you can walk to, mountains you don't need a car to reach.
American suburbs forced me inside, into climate-controlled cars and buildings. Zelda taught me to embrace discomfort, seek adventure, and explore. Moving to Europe showed me Zelda was right all along.
In this video, I celebrate Zelda's 40th anniversary by sharing how the series inspired my love of exploration — and how American car dependency made that impossible until I left.
Featuring interviews with volunteers from Zelda Dungeon who were similarly inspired by the series to explore the outdoors.
