Lutz Ackermann, professor at the Georg-August University Göttingen, receives Bayer Foundation’s Hansen Family Award 2025 for developing and refining molecular research for the last 20 years.
His pioneering work in C-H activation has fundamentally transformed the way complex molecules can be modified for drug development. By enabling the direct and precise functionalization of carbon–hydrogen bonds, his research accelerates the creation of new therapeutic compounds and improves the efficiency of designing next generation anticancer agents. At the same time, his advancements in catalyst design are paving the way for more sustainable chemical processes, reducing the need for multi step syntheses and minimizing resource consumption and waste.
The Hansen Family Award is awarded every two years by the corporate foundation Bayer Foundation. The prize was created thanks to generous donations from the estate of Kurt Hansen, the former chairman of Bayer’s Supervisory Board. To date, 13 researchers have received the prize, including Emmanuelle Charpentier, Nobel laureate and scientist in the field of genome editing.
At Bayer Foundation, we catalyze advances in science and social innovation for a world with Health for All and Hunger for None:
