Johannes Opper, a German civilian, was executed by hanging at Bruchsal Prison in November 1945. He was convicted by a U.S. military tribunal for his role in the Rüsselsheim Massacre of August 1944.
After an American bombing raid on Rüsselsheim, eight captured U.S. airmen were marched through the city. A mob of civilians, including Opper, attacked them with stones and clubs. Six of the airmen were beaten to death.
Following the end of World War II, Allied authorities held trials to punish those responsible. Opper’s execution stood as a warning that mob violence against prisoners of war would not go unpunished.
