Monkhouse’s early career involved writing for radio and film before moving into stand-up comedy and television. He became a household name through his hosting of popular game shows like The Golden Shot, Celebrity Squares, and Bob’s Full House. Despite sometimes being perceived as too slick or polished, his encyclopedic knowledge of comedy, razor-sharp timing, and ability to ad-lib were widely admired.
Behind the professional charm, Monkhouse had a deep love for the art of comedy, amassing one of the UK’s most comprehensive archives of film and television. Later in life, his candid reflections about aging, illness, and his personal tragedies revealed a more vulnerable and human side to the man once dubbed "the king of the one-liners."
One of the greatest tragedies in Monkhouse's life was the death of his son, Simon, in 2001. Simon died at the age of 46 from cerebral palsy, a condition he had battled since birth. Bob was deeply affected by Simon’s passing, which followed the earlier death of another son, Gary, from a heroin overdose in 1992. Monkhouse rarely spoke publicly about these losses, but those close to him knew they left an indelible mark.
Bob Monkhouse himself died of prostate cancer on December 29, 2003, at the age of 75. He left behind a legacy as one of Britain’s most accomplished and respected comedians, remembered not only for his brilliance on stage but also for his resilience off it.
