A hero in Serbia, she is hardly known in the UK and is the only British woman to have fought as a soldier in World War One, was badly wounded in an attack and received Serbia's highest medal, as was called 'brother' by her fellow soldiers. Flora Sandes lived from 1876 to 1956 and was a soldier with the Serbian Army in her 40s during WWI (1914 - 1918)
Here is her remarkable story on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One in a week's time.
