The government’s Renters’ Reform Bill, first introduced in 2023, aims to protect renters’ rights in the housing market. It proposes the removal of Section 21 ‘no fault evictions’ which has been a key topic of debate since its inception.

In this film, Dr Ed Kirton-Darling, from the University of Bristol Law School, explains what the impact of removing Section 21 might be, and why he supports its removal.

Professor Alex Marsh, from Bristol's School for Policy Studies, also discusses what might constitute an unlawful eviction - while it is covered by the criminal law, it’s up to the local authority to decide whether to prosecute a landlord.

We also look at part of Ed's academic work in this area, which has been focussed on the production of a training video. This aims to help provide Avon and Somerset police with information on how to deal with illegal eviction situations.
