This week, I’m going to be looking at yellows in light and shadow.
The shadow colours for yellows are particularly tricky for a lot of people. It’s very easy for them to turn greenish and unpleasant. And just wrong-looking.
What actually happens to the colour when a yellow is in shadow?
So today’s session will be an alla prima study of this lemon.
I’ll be using chromamagic to have a close look at what the light and shadow colours are, and how the local changes as it moves into the shadow area.
The lemon has been photographed with a large shadow area deliberately, so we have plenty of room to look at the colour there.
Emphasis will be on a brushy and loose painting!
Tha app I use at the beginning is called ChromaMagic. You can find it on the Apple and Google Play stores, and there is also a Windows version. It's very inexpensive and extremely useful!
You can get the Munsell value scale - which allows you to translate values from the app directly to your painting - from Paul Centore on Ebay here, also very inexpensive: https://www.ebay.com/itm/223003792036
