Welcome to the Operating System Revision Series for GATE 2026! 🎯
In this lecture, we explore one of the most widely used CPU scheduling algorithms – Round Robin Scheduling (RR). Round Robin is a preemptive scheduling method designed for time-sharing systems, where each process is given a fixed time quantum in a cyclic order.
We discuss how Round Robin works, its key features, advantages, and disadvantages compared to other scheduling algorithms. With detailed numerical examples, we explain how to calculate waiting time, turnaround time, response time, and the impact of choosing different time quantum values. This lecture also covers why RR is considered fair and how it avoids starvation but may lead to higher context-switching overhead.
This session is highly important for GATE CSE 2026 as well as university and competitive exams. By the end of this lecture, you will clearly understand the working of Round Robin Scheduling and be ready to solve exam-oriented problems with accuracy and speed.
