Unknown Japanese History - Sakamoto Ryoma The man who shaped the future of Japan. He was born in 1836 in Tosa Domain. His sister enrolled him in swordsmanship, and by adulthood, he was a master.
As Japan ended over 200 years of isolation, foreign ships arrived, shaking the old order. Ryōma saw the Tokugawa shogunate as outdated; and dangerous, and he plotted with others to bring down the shogunate. Under the alias Saitani Umetarō, he became a wanted man. The Shinsengumi hunted him. But Ryōma wasn’t just a rebel, he was a visionary.
He helped broker peace between rival samurai clans, Satsuma and Chōshū, uniting them against the shogunate. That alliance eventually led to the Meiji Restoration.
He survived one assassination attempt by fighting off his assassins with a modern 6 shooter, very unusual for a Samurai at this time. But in 1867, he died when a team of assassins stormed the room in an inn in Omiya. He died at 31 years old, just weeks before the new Japan he dreamed of was born.
Ryōma’s dream? A modern Japan, free from feudalism, governed by democracy. His "Eight Proposals" would inspire Japan’s first parliament.
