From a Black Perspective: The Homeland is a significant anthology that "celebrates the diversity within the Black literary community." The volume presents a sterling showcase of inventive, daring, and diverse Black voices that explore various corners of the life experience. These eclectic and emotion-laden stories connect naturally but can also stand alone. The two shorts I reviewed are Light and Darkness: The Human Tarkin War by Eddie S. Pierce, Jr. and Disclosed by Ken Compton.

Because I'm a rabid sci-fi (science fiction) aficionado, I dove into Light and Darkness: The Human Tarkin War first. I appreciate imaginative, well-written scifi works; Star Trek: Deep Space Nine immediately comes to mind. Light and Darkness is in that vein. The author delivers an engaging and compelling story with crisp dialogue and detailed "sci-fi language." The reader feels like a "fly on the wall," fully immersed in this world of the future.

Light and Darkness: The Human Tarkin War contains action, adventure, angst, and awe. And the ending leaves you wanting to learn and experience more of Pierce, Jr.'s universe.

Now, onto Disclosed. The title appropriately encapsulates the theme, the meat of the story. The author utilizes crackling dialogue, instead of exposition, to tell the tale—and he does so rather well.

Disclosed hooks you from the very beginning. A winning writer's toolkit must contain that particular ability. The sweet resolution--the ending--is a fragrant breath of fresh air. It's going to be quite interesting, to say the least, to experience Compton's continued growth as a talent.
