This week took me to the beautiful village of Great Ayton in North Yorkshire. It’s a picturesque spot, boasting a magnificent church and an equally wonderful vicar, Sarah, who generously allowed me access to the organ so I could create this video.
A huge thank you to Revd Sarah Cliff and the wonderful community at Christ Church!
The instrument is a splendid J.J. Binns pipe organ from around 1880–1899 (dates vary slightly in records, but it’s a classic from the Leeds builder’s era), and it’s kept in excellent condition with ongoing maintenance and tuning by Wood Organ Builders (who’ve even carried out restoration work in the past, including re-instating features like the hand-blowing mechanism).
Despite the chilly weather that day, it was an absolute joy to play and explore. The tone is rich and characterful, as you’d expect from a well-cared-for Binns.
