Lemon was covering the Grammy Awards when federal authorities took him into custody in connection with a protest at a church in St. Paul, Minnesota, on January 18. According to his lawyer, Abbe Lowell, Lemon was reporting on the demonstration, interviewing participants, and documenting events — not actively protesting.

The protest had briefly disrupted a church service, with chants against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Trump administration initially sought to charge eight individuals under a federal law protecting worshippers from disruption. A magistrate judge dismissed charges against Lemon due to insufficient evidence, approving warrants for only three others.

Despite this, the Justice Department moved to pursue Lemon’s arrest, which his legal team has called an unprecedented attack on journalistic freedom. Lemon was detained in a Beverly Hills hotel lobby and is scheduled to appear in federal court in Los Angeles.
