We started our debt free journey by listening to Dave Ramsey and trading in our cars for something cheaper, to get rid of our car payments. These are some rules we followed when buying a used car.

1) Research, Research, and more Research
High mileage cars aren’t necessarily unreliable cars, and low mileage cars aren’t necessarily reliable cars. It's important to learn manufacturers that make cars that have long lifespans. Not all years for the same car are created equal, either. Kelly Blue Book and/or Edmunds are great for researching ratings on the vehicles you’re looking at, and also comparing the years they were made.
2) Carfax/Vehicle History is a Must
You need to know how the car you're potentially purchasing was taken care of. Two owners or less is what Brittany and I look for (the fewer number of owners, the less risk you have of getting a car that wasn’t taken care of as it should have been). Minor accidents are probably okay, but no salvage titles or anything weird. You can get a salvage car for very cheap, but when we were in the process of becoming debt free, we didn't think that wasn't the time to be taking chances with risks like that.
3) The Seller NEEDS to be Reputable
A reputable car dealer with integrity is a must for when you're trading down in car to become debt free. Not all big brand dealerships are good, and not all small used car dealers are scammy. We’ve had the best experiences/successes with the big ones though. Look for good reviews on Google, Yelp or Facebook. Family members could be a possibility as well, if they're looking to sell a car during the same time you're looking to buy. We don’t have much experience buying from individual sellers outside family, so we can’t speak much to this one other than follow the other points. Have a mechanic check out any vehicle you're thinking of buying from a third party dealer or individual.
4) PRICE (Under 10k for us, but above $3k)
This one will very much be dependent on the individual's personal finances, debt and income levels, etc. But we wanted to stay under $10,000. There are some extremely reliable cars in this price point. The car Mike drives right now cost $7,500 when we purchased it a few years ago and has been very reliable with the exception of a couple items recently.
For us, the best case scenario we look for when buying a car is:
a car that's capable of riving hundreds of thousands of miles
1 owner
no accidents
routine maintenance and oil changes
under $10k
Brittany and I bought 2 used cars before we did our debt free scream on the Dave Ramsey show, and have purchased 2 or 3 more used cars since then.
