So you want to get a mobile radio set up in your vehicle? These are the basics to think about when putting a ham radio in your car or truck:
Portability vs Power & Features
The right antenna
How to install everything
In this video I discuss the basics of what to keep in mind when deciding what radio to install in your vehicle and how to mount it. This isn't a step-by-step installation guide, because each vehicle will obviously have unique challenges. but this video should give you some important tips to keep in mind when thinking about how to get set up.
It doesn't matter what specific radio you get, just make sure it has 45 or 50 watts of transmit power, is dual band (both UHF & VHF), can monitor two bands at once, and has good features, specifically "cross-band repeat". If you find a tri-band radio (one that does 1.25m band as well), that would be awesome.

I forgot to mention that having Anderson Power Poles set up like this between the battery and the radio allows me to both power an HF rig by plugging into the truck's battery (either while the truck is running, or the relay is engaged), and also easily use an auxiliary 12v battery to power the UHF/VHF mobile rig when I'm stationary so I don't drain the truck's battery.
