Teach Your Dog To LOVE Coming When Called
This video talks about teaching your dog to “recall.” What IS a recall? Recall is a fancy dog training word for “teaching your dog to come to you when you call them.”
The best way to teach your dog to come when called is to make it fun! Make it into a game.
Here are THREE games you can play with your dog to teach them to RUN to you when you give them the cue “Come!”
ROUND ROBIN
Sit in a circle with your whole family and make sure that everyone has 9-12 yummy dog treats. Take turns saying your dog’s name, followed by the word “COME.” Make sure you say your dog’s name and the word “come” in a happy, clear voice. Say it once! When your dog comes to you, place 3 treats, one at a time on the ground in front of you, and then say “ALL DONE.” Now someone else in your family can take their turn. Go round and round till everyone is done with their treats. If your dog doesn’t come to you, you are going to quietly count to 10 in your head, and then try again.
HIDE AND SEEK
Dogs love to play hide and seek almost as much as kids do, which makes this a great game to play with your dog. Have your mom or dad hold your dog while you hide with your dog’s favorite toy or some super treats, like hot dogs or chicken. Start off by hiding some place EASY, it’s ok if your dog sees you hide. When you’re in your hiding spot, say your dog’s name, followed by the word “COME!” Just like the last game, say your dog’s name in a happy voice and only say it one time! As soon as you say “come” your mom or dad can give your dog the chance to search. Make your hiding spot more difficult as your dog begins to understand the game.
FREEZE and TREAT
This game is good for teaching dogs to come to you, and be calm. Have your mom or dad set up 4 cones, about 10 feet apart. Stand at the first cone with a bunch of yummy dog treats. Give your dog 3 treats on the ground in front of you. Now grab another 3 treats and quietly say the word “come” and walk to the second cone. Freeze! And if your dog has four paws on the ground, give your dog another 3 treats. If your dog jumps for the treats, stay FROZEN. Stare at the sky, and keep your hands crossed in front of you until your dog puts four paws on the ground. When your dogs puts four paws on the ground, place 3 treats in front of them. Now say the word “COME” and walk to the third cone. Freeze! And give your dog 3 treats if they are standing, sitting or lying down. The important thing is that they have four paws on the ground!
