French Rugby League was booming in the 1930s… and then World War II happened. In this video, I break down one of the wildest (and most infuriating) stories in global sport: how the Nazi-aligned Vichy government, heavily influenced by Rugby Union officials, outlawed Rugby League in France, dissolved its federation, and seized its assets. We’ll go from the pre-war explosion sparked by Jean Galia and the rise of Rugby à Treize, to the 1941 ban that made playing League a literal crime, to the post-war “return” that was really a legal loophole designed to keep the stolen stadiums, clubs, and money out of League’s hands. If you’ve ever wondered why French Rugby League never became as dominant as it looked destined to be, this is the missing chapter. And if you finish this thinking “that can’t be real”… unfortunately, it is.
