Involuntary manslaughter is usually charged when someone accidentally kills someone, but was behaving recklessly when they did so, and so the law feels it necessary to hold them accountable.

There are many situations which could lead to an involuntary manslaughter charge. But one example is a doctor who is administering anesthesia as a sleeping aid, and not properly monitoring the patient, who dies because of the drugs. This happened in the death of Michael Jackson, and the doctor, Conrad Murray, was charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Involuntary manslaughter, under Penal Code 192b PC, is a felony, and can lead to up to 4 years in prison, if convicted.

Perhaps the accused did accidentally kill someone, however they were not acting recklessly as the law defines it.
