At least 10 people are dead and a further 35 are injured after a car plowed into a crowd celebrating the New Year in New Orleans.

The disturbing incident - described as a "terrorist attack" by the mayor - unfolded around 3.15am on Bourbon Street. Two police officers were also shot by the gunman from inside the car, officials said.

Investigators are analyzing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) found at the scene. "There were improvised explosive devices that was found, and we are working on confirming if it’s a viable device or not," said Alethea Duncan, Assistant Special Agent in Charge for the FBI’s New Orleans office.
City authorities, including Nola Ready - New Orleans' emergency preparedness unit - are urging the public to steer clear of Canal and Bourbon streets.
A message shared on social media platform X reads: "There has been a mass casualty incident on Canal and Bourbon Street. Get yourself away from the area."
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is calling the incident a “terrorist attack.”
According to Nola Ready, many of those injured have been taken to hospitals for care, as first responders and other public safety partners rush to manage the chaotic scene. "There are 30 injured patients that have been transported by NOEMS and 10 fatalities," the city reported, indicating the number of casualties handled by the New Orleans Emergency Medical Services.
Alethea Duncan, an assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s New Orleans field office, said officials were investigating the discovery of at least one suspected improvised explosive device at the scene.

Earlier, the New Orleans Police Department said it was responding to a mass casualty incident Wednesday that included fatalities. NOLA Ready advised people to stay away from the area.
