Adelson, formerly a successful periodontist in the Miami area, is currently in jail suspected of masterminding the 2014 murder of FSU law professor Dan Markel. Adelson filed this lawsuit in December 2020 after his disability insurance carrier denied his claim for benefits. He alleged that he hurt his back in January 2016 in the Philippines & experienced a great decline in income due to his back injury. Coincidentally, in 2016, Sigfredo Garcia, Luis Rivera, and later Katherine Magbanua were all arrested and charged for their roles in the murder of Dan Markel.
