Hello everyone,
In this episode of my Road to Master series, we’re back at the Zilveren Toren, a yearly team tournament in Antwerp similar to interclub competitions. This time, I decide to unleash one of my rare surprise weapons: 1.b4.
The Polish/Orangutan Opening is extremely uncommon at club level, and that’s exactly why it can be such a practical weapon. Most opponents are unfamiliar with the ideas, and the plans for White are surprisingly clear and straightforward when you understand the structure.
The game itself begins calmly and never turns into a tactical slugfest, but that’s what makes it so instructive. I explain how to find plans in positions that seem equal and drawish at first glance, and how small strategic decisions allowed me to gradually simplify into a winning endgame.
This is a great example of how to:
Use surprise value effectively
Navigate quiet middlegames with clear planning
Trade into favorable endgames
Convert small advantages without needing fireworks
If you enjoy practical chess, offbeat openings, and learning how to press in calm positions, this one is definitely worth watching.
