It is very important to understand the severity of the disease when you test Covid-19 positive. There are two ways to determine the severity of a Covid-19 positive patient, which include the way he/she breathe and also by measuring SpO2 (Saturation) monitoring. Dr. Merlin Moni, Associate Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, Amrita Hospital, Kochi, talks about the ways to determine the severity of disease in a Covid-19 patient and measures to be taken in-home quarantine.
Measuring respiratory rate will help to find out the severity of a patient's disease. Normally, a person's respiratory rate will be 12 to 18 breaths in one minute. If a patient's respiratory rate is higher than 24 and saturation level is lowering, then you should immediately seek a doctor's attention.
Pulse oximeter is a simple device that is used to measure the oxygen level (oxygen saturation) of the blood. Normally, pulse oximeter show blood saturation as 95-100%. A Covid-19 patient must test blood saturation using a pulse oximeter at least thrice a day.
