Artwork by Take Me Back Pirate Radio Archives. The channel would like to celebrate another UK Garage hall of fame icon, MC God's Gift (MC GodsGift). He started his career as a Jungle MC spitting his rhymes on his local pirate radio station, Rinse FM 97.6 as MC Pepsi. He continued to feature on Rinse FM 91.8 throughout the 90s when they changed dial. Like many of the Rinse FM MCs he found it incredibly difficult to breakthrough in Jungle/Drum & Bass scene as it was incredibly tight knit.
Rinse FM had suffered raids as a Jungle pirate, but made a comeback at on 100.3FM dial joining forces with the old Pressure FM team. The Drum & Bass element still dominated that station but UK Garage was giving it a run for its money. The SPP (DJ Slimzee, MC Paco and MC Plague) would take London's FM dial by storm. Then suddenly we were hit by the incredible voice, flow and lyrics of MC GodsGift on their show.
Rinse FM became a powerhouse of talent for the scene's most talented MCs. What we find incredibly disrespectful is how newbies equated them with all these new UK Garage crews and sensations. Beforehand, MCs like God's Gift, Wiley, Plague, Maxwell D, Paco, D Double E had been skilled pros in the Jungle scene and most probably inspired a lot of UK Garage MCs.
MC GodsGift's style was a blend of flavours with a touch of a Ragga flow and yardman voice, along with a mixture of classic UK Garage hosting and Hip Hop rapping. He was the real deal. Note that MC Armour and MC Sharkie Major from the Nasty Crew styles were influenced by GodsGift. GodsGift was the UK Garage scene's first lyrical bad boy. We gather So Solid were already on the radar, but none of their artists at that moment in time were lyrically as raw as God's Gift. He was the equivalent of Riko Dan/Bassman on Jungle for UK Garage scene. Many MCs compared the two MCs in later years with the evolution from UK Garage to Grime.
MC GodsGift firstly made his claim to fame from the release of the "Mic Tribute" with the production of United Grooves Collective (DJ Hermit & DJ Daniel Ward). "Mic Tribute" was remixed by DJ Teebone, on his So Solid City Records label, "Mic Tribute Update".
Then came the success of the Pay As Go Cartel, and MC GodsGift inclusion into the crew around the year 2000, also with the release of "Know We" which GodsGift did the vocals for. In "Mic Tribute" MC God's Gift had effectively bigged up the UK Garage MC hall of fame, but there was tension simmering. Apparently MC Major Ace had stolen some of MC Bushkin's lyrics, this in turn caused friction and it all kicked off in 2001 @Destinys Nightclub, in Watford. Heartless Crew subverted MC GodsGift lyrics from "Know We" to "No Weed" and "No Gyal" (No Girls). This sent God's Gift, Maxwell D, Major Ace and Wiley into a bitter frenzy with the infamous follow up to this clash on Rinse FM with them sending for the Heartless Crew.
From that moment on the clashing culture was born. To the those who follow Grime and its history this is where it all started. MC GodsGift was incarcerated in HMP roughly for one year which had a damaging impact on his career. Word on the street was he had featured on the Pay As You Go Cartel's "Champagne Dance" but was pulled from it due to his prison sentence. The major record labels didn't want to be associated with him. From there we believe the problems began. On his release MC GodsGift was a different beast, he was more aggressive and switched on battle mode and nobody could stop him. The gun talk, explicit sex talk and ghetto chronicles where a raw reality. To young up and coming MCs like Dizzee Rascal, GodsGift was an inspiration and we saw Gift feature on Dizzee Rascal's debut alum "Boy In The Corner", in 2003: Track 8, "Hold Ya Mouf".
The Pay As You Go Cartel were experiencing difficulties, with petty squabbles. MC Major Ace decided to jump ship joining Deja Vu FM as part of Nicky Slim Ting's East Connection, God's Gift featured on some of East Co's releases and Wiley was building his empire with Roll Deep.
As the scene morphed into Grime and Dubstep, the clashing culture was alive a kicking. In 2004, MC Lethal B (Lethal Bizzle) released his track "Forward Riddim" ("Pow") which then sparked a bitter feud between him and God's Gift over the appropriation of "Pow" as GodsGift MC used "Pow" as did MC B-Live (Evil B (Problem Central)). GodsGift responded on "Pow Back" and would later be dubbed as one of the Grime Originals, helping bring through young local talent, founding the Mucky Wolfpack and Younger Mucky Wolf Pack.
Though good friends with Wiley and Riko Dan, GodsGift did clash them and was known for his fiery outbursts on pirate radio, during the height of Grime, featuring on Raw Mission FM, Flava FM, Deja Vu FM, Ice FM and many other top London pirate radio stations.
We salute the Jungle, UK Garage and Grime legend, MC GodsGift aka MC Pepsi.
