Officials expect subway passenger transport to begin in 2026.
MAN Siddiqui, Managing Director, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited, said, "The construction work of the subway depot will start in the first quarter of the next 2022-23 fiscal year through land development. Therefore, other preparations including land acquisition have been completed."
As part of the preliminary work, the authority on Wednesday formally handed over the license to Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited.
Mr. Siddiqui said, "On Sunday, June 20, the donor agency will be sent to JICA for a concourse. If approved, a contractor will be appointed."
Then the construction work will start.
He said the land acquisition work has already been completed. Mr Siddiqui said the subway would pass at least 30 meters below the ground. The construction would be carried out with a tunnel boring machine. Tunnels are being constructed under the river Karnafuli with the same machine used in the construction of underground installations.
According to the official website, the cost of the subway project is estimated at Tk 52,561 crore. Work from Kamalapur to the airport is expected to be completed by 2026.

According to the information provided on the website of Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority, the subway, also known as Metrorail line or MRT-1, will run from the airport to Kamalapur.
