I bought a 1984 Toyota Celica GT-S for $40. I tried to rebuild it, messed the first job up so badly the motor was destroyed, and a year later I rebuilt the 22RE the right way. This is the full story — the mistakes, the lessons, and the final reveal.
The story:
In early 2017 I was at a friend’s house when he said he was going to scrap his 1984 Celica. The scrap guy offered $30 — I joked “I’ll give you $40, buddy” and walked away with the car. It sat in my barn for about a year while life happened. My dad (who’d owned a Celica when he was young) bought it from me and drove it to work for a few months — after my mom tired of the extra cars, he gave it back. That’s when I made my first video showing the blown head gasket oil.
I worked at a shop back then but was still learning, so I parked the car until I could do it right. Fast-forward almost five years and I finally tore into it. The rebuild you see here was done 100% by me, learn-as-I-go style. I’d rebuilt small engines before (chainsaws, lawn mowers), but this was my first full car engine rebuild — and I paid for some mistakes.
What I learned:
• Take your time.
• Write everything down and triple-check torque specs and clearances.
• Don’t cut corners. If your gut says “don’t do that,” listen to it.
If you’re starting your first rebuild — learn from my mistakes so you don’t have to learn them the hard way.
